What can Newcastle expect from Steve McClaren’s tenure

After numerous attempts to appoint him over the years, Newcastle are finally able to call Steve McClaren their manager after unveiling him as John Carver’s successor on an initial three-year deal.
The former Middlesbrough manager returns to the north east having been sacked by Championship club Derby at the end of the season, thanks to a drastic loss of form that saw the club slide out of the play-off places.
Despite recent misfortune on these shores, McClaren remains a unique manager. He is one of just seven Englishmen to win a trophy since the start of the Premier League era and has a league title from days spent in FC Twente’s dugout on his CV too. Ladbrokes make it 20/1 that he wins some silverware in his first term on Tyneside.
But what exactly can the Magpies fans expect from his stint in charge, which could be as long as eight years should his contract be extended?
A short stay
Unfortunately, the likelihood of McClaren seeing out his three-year deal, yet alone the eight, looks quite remote.
Not since his first stint at Twente between June 2008 and June 2010 has the former England boss lasted two years in a job.
Since that first stay in Holland, which followed a five-year tenure with Boro, McClaren has had stints with Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Twente (again) and Derby all last less than 100 games.
He is 6/1 to be sacked before the last Premier League game of next season.
Few draws
What is clear with the 54-year-old’s sides is that he won’t set them out to share the points too often.
Taking his three longest jobs as a sample, Boro turned in only one season of more than 10 draws during McClaren’s time at the Riverside, Twente drew 14 of 68 in the Eredivisie and Derby just 21 of 82 in the Championship.
