Meet Murray’s supporting Wimbledon cast led by Watson

All eyes of the British public will once again be transfixed on the fortunes of Andy Murray at Wimbledon as the Scot attempts to add to his historic 2013 triumph in south west London.

Despite a tough draw which could see him face both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on the way to a prospective final, Murray’s excellent 2015 form sees him installed as the 5/2 second favourite behind world number one Novak Djokovic.

While Murray mania is sure to descend on SW19 once more, there will be four other Brits taking to the famous grass courts, who audiences may not be quite so familiar with. Sadly, Laura Robson’s battles with injury this season means the tournament has come to early on the comeback trail.

It’s fair to say their chances of glory are more remote than some pacific islands, but nevertheless this quartet are sure to get the union jacks waving, even if it’s only for a short time.

Heather Watson – world number 64 – 200/1

The Guernsey-born 23-year-old understandably carries the highest profile of the other Brits in the draw having won two official WTP Tour events in her career to date. The last of those arrived in Hobart in January and the British number one has also gone the furthest in majors too. She’s reached the third round at both Wimbledon in 2012 and the Australian Open in 2014.

Kyle Edmund – world number 101 – 1500/1

Still only 20, Edmund is one of the rising stars of men’s tennis in Britain. The former US Open and French Open Junior doubles champion won his first ever Challenger Tour event this year, navigating the entire tournament in Hong Kong without dropping a set. Edmund also made the second round of the French Open this year, only for injury to force him to withdraw.

James Ward – world number 110 – 1000/1

The 28-year-old Londoner turned pro in 2006 and aftr qualifying for the first-round proper of the Australian Open in January Ward reached a career high 101 in the world. The 6ft 3 Brit did stir the juices back in 2012 when he won his first ever Grand Slam match at Wimbledon, defeating then world number 36 Pablo Andujar in a five-set thriller, which is still his best result.

Johanna Konta – world number 146 – 150/1

Australian-born Konta reached a career-high ranking of 89 last year which probably accounts for her slightly shorter odds. However, the 24-year-old right hander is still yet to taste victory on the ATP Tour and having been dumped out in the first round of Wimbledon for four successive years, anything better would be a bonus.
