Man Utd considering sensational swap for most costly flop

Published:

It would be one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer if the rumoured swap deal between Manchester United and Paris St-Germain really does take place.

The Daily Star’s latest exclusive claims Louis van Gaal is willing to let United’s record signing Angel Di Maria leave for Paris in a straight player-for-player exchange with Edinson Cavani.

While it’s often wise to approach such revelations with a pinch or two of salt, there is actual good reason to believe this may not be pie in the sky.

Cavani has been a target for the Red Devils ever since the Uruguayan international chose PSG over Old Trafford when leaving Italian side Napoli in July 2013.

Although his time in the French capital has not turned out to be quite so prolific as his Serie A days, Cavani is still valued at around the £50m paid for his services and United’s interest has remained strong.

Meanwhile, after a dazzling enough start to life at Old Trafford, Di Maria has drastically failed to justify his £59.7 British record transfer fee so he presents United with a real problem.

Do they keep the faith or move him on? With Barcelona and Bayern Munich hoping to get the Argentine for a knocked-down figure, United are believed to be uninterested in letting Di Maria leave like that.

Therefore the potential swap deal is far more appealing given that LVG is almost certain to see his striking stocks depleted to the bare bones of Wayne Rooney and youngster James Wilson if reports bear fruit.

Radamel Falcao has already moved on to Chelsea, while Javier Hernandez is wanted by a string of clubs and Robin van Persie is mulling over his future after a tough season by his illustrious standards.

This could actually be the most satisfactory outcome for United.
