Man United hoping to land Bale and Varane if De Gea joins Madrid

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal appears resigned to losing goalkeeper David de Gea to Real Madrid but the Red Devils boss is reportedly adamant on making the move worth his while.
Van Gaal is said to have bid £110m for Welsh wonder winger Gareth Bale and France defender Raphael Varane and while that fee has been rejected by the Bernabeu club it clearly signals the Dutchman’s intent.
De Gea is considered to have already said his goodbyes to his United team mates, with reports suggesting a fee of anywhere between £20m and £40m taking the ‘keeper back to his home town.
United already have Victor Valdes waiting in the wings and with both Asmir Begovic and Petr Cech priced at evens to move to Old Trafford this summer little of that fee is likely to be used on replacing the outgoing Spaniard.
So with United not needing to hold Madrid to ransom over a fee for De Gea, Van Gaal instead is looking to use the La Liga giants’ interest in their man to leverage his position in seeking new recruits.
Bale has been a long-time target for United, with the Old Trafford club’s interest dating back to the winger’s days at Southampton.
The Welshman has endured a stop-start time in Spain with highlights including goals in the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals but low points seeing him booed by sections of the crowd and confronted by angry mobs after games.
Ladbrokes now have the former Tottenham man at just 6/4 to move to United this summer, with Manchester City (8/1) and Chelsea (12/1) also interested in acquiring his services.
Mats Hummels remains United’s top defensive target and is a 4/11 shot to leave Borussia Dortmund for Old Trafford this summer, but if Van Gaal can get Varane thrown into any deal involving De Gea and Bale the German World Cup winner could go on to create a formidable partnership at the heart of the United defence.
