Copa America: Uruguay and Argentina set for winning starts

Published:

Invitees Jamaica are in Chile to do more than make up the numbers but they’ll struggle to show that against an in-form Uruguay.

Oscar Tabarez’s side have lost just once in eight games and should be backed for an opening day win alongside an Argentina team set to make light work of Paraguay.

Uruguay v Jamaica

Reigning champions Uruguay will be without star man Luis Suarez in Chile and lost 2-0 in their only previous fixture against the Reggae Boyz in a 2004 friendly.

However, Edinson Cavani is a more than adequate replacement for Suarez and the PSG man will relish the limelight created by the Barcelona striker’s absence.

As such, Jamaica have to be ignored at 11/1 making the 1/4 on a win for the South Americans the only way to go in the win-draw-win market.

Cavani is a tempting goal scorer pick with odds of 3/1 for him to score first , 5/6 at anytime and 19/5 to bag two or more.

And, while we can expect goals from the Manchester United target, the presence of Diego Godin and Jose Jiminez in defence should ensure the total number of goals is likely to be on the low side.

10 of Uruguay’s last 16 matches had under 2.5 goals

Recommended bet: Under 2.5 goals at 21/20

Argentina v Paraguay

Having won eight of their last nine opening games in major tournaments Argentina are expected to start with a bang in Chile.

A 5-0 friendly win over Bolivia, even without Lionel Messi and  Javier Mascherano in the side., was the perfect warm up and La Albiceleste will fancy their chances against a side they beat 8-3 on aggregate in World Cup qualifying.

Paraguay have won just one of their last nine friendlies, despite not playing against any really strong teams, and although they reached the final in 2011 they look doomed to a losing start here.

DID YOU KNOW?

Argentina have overcome a -1 handicap in three of their last four opening Copa America games and four of their last six wins have come by more than one goal
