Copa America: This result is written all over Chile v Bolivia

Published:

Having failed to win a Copa America match not played at high altitude since hosting in 1997, it seems Bolivia are more of a force to be reckoned with than first thought following their 0-0 draw with Mexico and 3-2 defeat of Ecuador.

Mauricio Soria’s side are assured of third place at least, which would likely deliver Bolivia to the quarter finals, but with the far-from-settled hosts up next, top spot could still be on the cards for El Verde.

Chile traded blows with Mexico last time out, eventually drawing 3-3 with Miguel Herrera’s men, who went ahead twice at the Estadio Nacional.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side weren’t terribly impressive in their first match against Ecuador either, needing a 67th-minute Arturo Vidal penalty to break the deadlock against Group A’s basement boys, before Eduardo Vargas put some gloss on the scoreline with another six minutes from time.

La Roja’s squad is thought to have fractured prior to the tournament, with Sanchez reportedly having to be separated from teammates after being called greedy following a 1-0 pre-tournament victory over El Salvador.

Vidal’s arrest for drink-driving can’t have helped matters in the home camp, and Soria will surely look to exploit any potential lack of cohesion from Bolivia’s opponents.
