Bundesliga freebie makes no bones over Liverpool desires

You know silly season is in full flow when some players decide to dispense with formalities and leave nothing to chance where their preferred destinations are concerned.

Flying the flag for this particular breed is Schalke’s experienced Swiss international midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta, whose current contract expires this summer.

The 30-year-old playmaker has laid his cards firmly on the table as he seeks a fresh challenge away from the Gelsenkirchen-based outfit, and the Bundesliga more generally.

“The Premier League is of course very interesting. Liverpool and Tottenham are traditional clubs. If the conditions are right there, it would appeal immediately,” Barnetta said.

Having earned 74 caps, scoring ten times for Switzerland, the veteran of three World Cups is not short of experience to offer either top-four aspiring English outfit.

Considering the predominantly left-sided playmaker will be available for free, this is one plea which Liverpool and Tottenham may wish to give some attention.

With the Europa League back on the menu, both the Reds and Lilywhites will need to flesh out their current squads and Barnetta is no stranger to continental competition.

Barnetta represented previous club Bayer Leverkusen and loan club Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, whilst turning out for Schalke in the Champions League in the last few seasons also.

Whether his age profile is in keeping with what either Brendan Rodgers or Mauricio Pochettino are looking for still remains to be seen.

But with both clubs tipped to make sweeping changes in the summer, in terms of free agents they could probably do much worse.
