Arsenal must buy one of these strikers after Martinez slips net

Published:

Before Arsenal fans get too carried away believing Arsene Wenger’s hugely belated signing of one of the world’s best goalkeepers will secure the club an elusive Premier League title, other pieces of the jigsaw remain unaccounted for.

Gaining Petr Cech’s signature is a coup for the Gunners, albeit one brought about by favourable circumstances, and as his long-term Chelsea captain has since pointed out, the stopper is sure to beef up Arsenal’s eventual points tally in 2015/16.

However, if the red half of north London are to get their collective mitts on the league title after a decade gap – a feat priced up at 5/1 by Ladbrokes – adding a world class striker to the group is just as essential.

For as long as Wenger has failed to snare a keeper of Cech’s repute, their have been glaring inadequecies up front as well.

If you look at where the previous title-winning bar was set with Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp in tandem, then the picture becomes clearer.

It won’t have escaped many Gooners’ attentions that over the past 24 hours yet another potentially great striker heavily linked to Arsenal has evaded them, with Porto’s Jackson Martinez opting for Atletico Madrid instead.

Theo Walcott has potential, though he’s never been trusted to lead the line, Danny Welbeck is far from prolific and Olivier Giroud is very good without being brilliant and crucially lacks pace.

If Arsenal are to enter this new season with genuine claims on the title, then one of these three men must arrive at the Emirates.

Alexandre Lacazette – Lyon

The top scorer in France last season is understandably a man in demand and still only 24 years of age, he would be a top-notch addition to Wenger’s ranks now and for the future.

Gonzalo Higuain – Napoli

The Argentine ace enjoyed another goal-filled campaign in Serie A, but after Rafael Benitez’s departure to Real Madrid and the club missing out on the Champions League, the Gunners can make their move.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund

The 25-goal tally the French-born striker scored for Borussia Dortmund looks even more impressive in the context of the club’s disappointing season.
