3 outright ODI bets ahead of England’s New Zealand series

Published:

Trevor Bayliss isn’t in the country to take the reins of England’s cricket side yet, but he is making his presence felt in the lead up to the one-day series with New Zealand.

Famed for his success as a limited-overs coach, the Australian has been passing messages to Paul Farbrace, the interim head coach in his absence, to pass on to the players.

The former Sri Lanka coach has even had his say on the selection of this squad, which carries a youthful tinge, as Eoin Morgan and co strive for huge improvements on their World Cup performances.

Ahead of a five-match series which Brendon McCullum’s Kiwis are 4/9 favourites to win, here are three of the best outright bets around:

Jason Roy to be England’s leading runscorer @ 5/1

Surrey’s ultra-aggressive batsman heads into the series in the form of his life.

Although he is yet to translate that into white-ball cricket for the London club, Roy is averaging 64.25 in the County Championship with two hundreds and two fifties to his name.

A strike rate of 94.48 in that competition indicates that the transition into 50-over play shouldn’t be too troublesome.

Tim Southee to be New Zealand’s leading wicket taker @ 3/1

It was Southee’s new-ball partner Trent Boult that was the real star with the ball during the Test series and the World Cup, but Southee’s efforts shouldn’t be discounted, especially at this price.

He took at least two wickets in each of the Black Caps’ first four matches in that recent tournament but, crucially, slaughtered England when taking 7-33 in their meeting in the competition.

New Zealand to win 4-1 @ 11/4

Although there is cause for optimism among an England squad full of young talent, the fact remains that New Zealand are far and away a better ODI outfit at this point in time and just one win for Morgan’s men in this series would be considered a success.
