How Twitter reacted to the final day of the Premier League
Published:While many neutrals will have been hoping to see Newcastle go down at the start of play, such is Mike Ashley’s club’s unpopularity, no-one – bar Hull fans – will have been unhappy at the way the Magpies survived.
After battling back from cancer, Jonas Gutierrez first provided the cross for Moussa Sissoko’s opener, before scoring the second himself as Newcastle beat West Ham 2-0 to secure their top-flight place.
That result relegated Hull, who drew 0-0 with Manchester United, to settle the one major issue outstanding on the Premier League’s final day.
Elsewhere, Liverpool’s shocking 6-1 loss at Stoke allowed Spurs, who beat Everton 1-0, to climb above them into fifth and avoid a Europa League qualifier.
Other big results including Leicester shellacking QPR 5-1 and Arsenal drubbing West Brom 4-1 courtesy of a Theo Walcott hat-trick.
The drama didn’t end at the final whistle, however, as West Ham quickly moved to confirm Sam Allardyce would be leaving the club, while Brendan Rodgers might also be on thin ice.
Here’s how Twitter saw the final day of Premier League action.
Gary Lineker summed up Newcastle’s season adroitly.
The loveliest of finishes to the most horrible of seasons. Jonas Gutierrez ensures that Newcastle will stay up.

There was no shortage of tributes for the awesome Argentine.
Jonas Gutierrez. Discarded by Nufc, diagnosed with testicular cancer, comes back, wins his place. A genuine hero & absolutely immense today.

There were two England legends making their final Premier League appearance, and both scored, but one will remember the day with more fondness than the other.

Meanwhile, John Carver made his play to occupy the Newcastle dugout permanently.
