Spurs’ fine record with early deals bodes well for Kevin Wimmer

Tottenham Hotspur are a club who have become renowned for using every second of the transfer window to push through late deals.
Daniel Levy’s business instincts mean the Spurs chairman aims to secure the best possible deal on every occasion, even if means running the fax machine well beyond office hours.
However, this season Mauricio Pochettino’s side have moved surprisingly early to push through a deal for FC Koln defender Kevin Wimmer.
The 22-year-old himself confirmed he would be joining Spurs this summer, with the deal believed to be worth around £4.3m to the German club.
The move suggests a change in practice from Spurs, and it looks like it should be a welcome one given their past record when it comes to early transfer.
Back in 2006, Spurs pushed through quick deals for Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Didier Zokora and Dimitar Berbatov. Of the three, the Bulgarian was the stand out star, but the others also became first-team regulars.
The year after, Spurs pulled off their best move of recent times early in the summer, bringing in Gareth Bale from Southampton.
Younes Kaboul and Darren Bent also moved to White Hart Lane in the first weeks of the summer, admittedly to less effect than Bale, but the former at least somewhat made up for it during his second stint in north London.
The following summer, Spurs made another star signing early in the window, bringing Luka Modric to England from Dinamo Zagreb for around £15.8m.
It was another inspired move completed early, with the Croatian going on to become the Lilywhites’ key man in midfield.
Other early deals that year included John Bostock and Giovani Dos Santos, who proved less impressive than Modric, but goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes did don the first-team gloves for a couple of years.
Recently, Spurs have largely moved away from completing early moves, but those they have done have continued to impress.
Sandro and Brad Friedel both arrived in the first days of summer, and became important first team players during their time in north London.
In the past three summers, Spurs haven’t completed any deals until early July, with the Lilywhites’ especially slow out of the blocks last year.
The club were hampered then by having to complete a deal for their new manager Pochettino first, something that won’t stand in their way this time around, and they are clearly keen to complete their business as soon as possible.
Spurs’ last game of the season is away at Everton, a match Pochettino’s side are 2/1 to win.
