Rosberg and Raikkonen head best Spanish Grand Prix bets

Published:

Considering how important starting from pole position has seemingly been at the Spanish Grand Prix in the past decade, it is somewhat of a surprise to see that Nico Rosberg is not the favourite to claim a first victory of the season at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Eight of the last 10 victors have emerged from the top spot on the grid, yet Rosberg comes below teammate Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in the race winner market.

Ladbrokes are offering the top industry price on a Rosberg 25-point haul at 11/10, with championship leader Hamilton available at 4/5.

Hamilton had taken pole in each of the opening four races of the season, but this was the first to take place in Europe.

Maybe Hamilton climbed into the wrong McLaren given his time was virtually three tenths of a second slower than his German teammate.

Better news comes from the fact that 92% of the winners in Spain since being moved to its current track in 1991 have emerged from the front row of the grid.

This doesn’t bode well for the prospects of any other driver taking the chequered flag and therefore it is no surprise to see odds of 1/20 that either of the McLarens winning the Spanish Grand Prix.

Another fairly safe bet appears to be the 1/3 available that Kimi Raikkonen finishes in the top six in Spain, despite only starting from seventh on the grid.

The Ferrari driver tends to be a better racer than qualifying and has improved at least two positions from his starting spot in each of the last three races this season in Malaysia, China and Bahrain.

There are worse bets too than the 9/4 that Raikkonen ends up finishing on the podium.
