Rangers must upset big odds to overturn tie with Motherwell

Published:

Dreams of a return to the Scottish Premiership at the earliest possible opportunity are beginning to slip away for Rangers fans after Motherwell left Ibrox with a commanding 3-1 lead in the Championship play-off final first leg.

Having risen seamlessly through the divisions since the clubs’s liquidation, it looks as if the first major stumbling block has presented itself in the shape of Motherwell.

Although away goals do not count for double at any stage of the tie, overturning such a deficit looks a tall task indeed for the Gers, especially at Fir Park where Motherwell are strong.

Ladbrokes certainly give the Glasgow giants little chance to win the play-off with odds of 5/1 attached.

Meanwhile the Steelmen’s chances of retaining their top-flight status are rated as virtually nailed on from such an advantageous position at 1/9.

Despite finishing second from bottom in the Premiership this season, Fir Park proved remained a source of comfort for Ian Baraclough’s men.

His side are unbeaten in their last seven at home and holding a two-goal advantage will definitely fancy their chances of seeing off the threat of Rangers.

There is certainly a chink of hope thanks to Darren McGregor’s late Ibrox goal, but it looks as if the dmage may already have been done for the Old Firm.
