Premier League winger could ditch England to sign for Celtic

Watford winger Ikechi Anya could turn his back on a debut season in the Premier League in order to sign for Celtic, according to reports.

Anya, Scotland’s international player of the year, is keen to complete a fairytale rise through the football pyramid but Bhoys boss Ronny Delia is adamant on capturing the £4m-rated midfielder.

Glasgow-born Anya was practically on the football scrapheap after being dumped by Wycombe Wanderers in 2007.

However, the 27-year-old proved himself with non-league sides Halesowen Town and Northampton Town before embarking on a somewhat exotic route to the top, taking in spells at Sevilla Atletico, Celta Vigo, Granada and Cadiz before moving to Vicarage Road.

With the Hornets earning a runners-up spot in the Championship this season Anya’s long journey to the English top flight is well earned but if Delia gets his way it’ll be the Scottish Premiership where the speed merchant will play his trade next term.

Delia hopes that Anya’s lack of involvement in the run up to clinching promotion and the fact the 46-time Scottish champions will be able to offer him Champions League football could persuade the midfielder to travel north of the border.

Celtic take on Inverness this weekend and Delia’s men are odds-on to keep the party going with the Bhoys priced at 2/7 to claim all three points at Celtic Park.

As Chelsea showed against West Brom, however, winning the title doesn’t make immune to defeat and those thinking Caley can upset the odds could be tempted to back an away win at the enticing price of 9/1.
