Poll: Is Fabregas red the craziest of all time?

Published:

Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas was sent off in bizarre circumstances against West Brom last night and will miss three games after kicking a ball at the head of the Baggies’ Chris Brunt.

With referee Mike Jones dealing with a confrontation between Diego Costa and Gareth McAuley, Fabregas impatiently and inexplicably hoofed the ball towards the gathering crowd and by luck of unerring accuracy managed to catch Brunt on the noggin.

Jones failed to see the funny side and issued a straight red to the Spaniard, much to the dismay of Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

Samuel Inkoom – Dnipro v Karapty

Everyone knows the rules – you can’t remove your shirt when on the field of play. Some referees will let it slide, some will book you if you take your shirt off in celebration of a goal but this guy must really hate it …

Hakan Unsal – Turkey v Brazil

As a winner of five Turkish Super Lig titles, four Turkish Cups and the 2000 Uefa Cup Unsal is one of Turkey’s most decorated footballers. However he is most famous for being the man who kicked a ball into the midriff of Brazil ace Rivaldo at the 2002 World Cup before the Samba star did this …

David Healy – Wales v Northern Ireland

Referees get a bad rap but when a player can be sent off purely for celebrating two international goals it’s easy to see why the men in black get so much ire.

Healy celebrated the first of his strikes against Wales by jumping into the corner flag and picked up a second yellow for sending a fist pump in the way of his dad who was watching on from the stands. Ridiculous!

Ashley Vickers – Dorchester Town v Havant & Waterlooville

Ill judgement isn’t the sole reserve of top flight referees though as this non league official showed in 2011.

Dorchester Town player-manager Vickers grew tired of the ground staff’s poor attempts to curb the enthusiasm of a streaker but was sent off immediately after bringing the naked nutter’s run to a abrupt halt…

Neymar – Santos v Colo Colo

Anyone buying into the conspiracy that Brazilian referees had a protection order over Neymar may wish to reconsider after seeing this ridiculous red card. In celebration of another fine goal the Samba ace grabbed a paper mask and duly put it over his head. Harmless you may think, but the ref had other ideas…
