Newcastle United favourites ahead of Liverpool for 17-goal star

Charlie Austin looks set to extend his Premier League stay beyond the current campaign with Newcastle United the favourites to land the striker.

Austin has been one of the few bright lights for QPR, who were relegated from the top-flight last weekend with a 6-0 defeat to Manchester City.

And Ladbrokes are tipping the 25-year-old to earn a big money move elsewhere, with Newcastle the 6/4 front-runners to recruit the forward this summer.

The Magpies could yet face stiff competition from Merseyside, though, with Liverpool second in the betting at 5/1 to bring Austin to Anfield.

Two of next season’s major south coast players could also have a say, with Southampton and Bournemouth both thought to be in the running to recruit the former Poole Town non-league star.

Austin has managed 17 goals for Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League this season and would be the ideal acquisition for the Cherries, with manager Eddie Howe previously working with the striker during his stint as manager of Burnley.

Southampton could also signal their top four ambitions for next season with the signing of Austin, amid continued speculation linking Jay Rodriguez with a St Mary’s exit.

Bournemouth are 10/1 to sign the QPR man this summer with Southampton available at 12/1 alongside West Ham.

The Irons’ potential interest in Austin could depend on whether Sam Allardyce remains at the club, with the Hammers boss rumoured to be heading elsewhere this summer.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Austin’s 17 Premier League goals may not have prevented QPR from going down but they have been enough to convince punters that his future lies in the Premier League next season.”
