Newcastle United agree fee for Arsenal’s Champions League foe

Newcastle United are currently embroiled in a relegation battle and record-breaking slump – but that has seemingly not prevented them from sending a clear message of intent in the transfer market.

Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Leicester City made it eight consecutive Premier League defeats for the Magpies, with the north east club now just two points off the relegation zone.

Despite this, manager John Carver has been told his job is safe for the remainder of the season with those upstairs at St James’ Park evidently confident the club can avoid the drop.

That confidence has also manifested itself in a reported £15m bid for Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Currently playing for Anderlecht in Belgium, the Serbia international scored against Arsenal in the Champions League and comes highly-rated, having previously impressed with Partizan Belgrade.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the Magpies have agreed a fee with the Brussels giants for the 20-year-old, with personal terms set to be ironed out in the coming weeks.

A target man by trade, Mitrovic has also been linked to Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool among others, meaning Newcastle could yet face competition for his services.

It comes after a memorable second season in Belgium for the Serbian striker, who has notched up an impressive 25 goals in 47 appearances for his club side.

Capped 11 times by his national side to date, Mitrovic was part of the team that won the UEFA Under-19 Championship in 2013.

He took home the Golden Player award as the best player at the tournament two years ago and has long been tipped for a move to the Premier League.

Whether it’s with Newcastle United or another English top-flight side, remains to be seen.
