Newcastle target Chelsea Championship Player of the Year

Chelsea youngster Patrick Bamford could be set for a season-long stay at Newcastle United – provided the Magpies can maintain their Premier League status.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at second-tier side Middlesbrough and could yet play a decisive role in helping the Teesiders return to the Premier League.

Boro face Brentford in the second-leg of their play-off semi-final later, leading 2-1 from the first leg at Griffin Park and Bamford is expected to play some part in the game despite nursing an ankle problem.

The striker has already captured the Championship Player of the Year award after scoring 17 goals in the division for Middlesbrough and is set to be rewarded with a new five-year contract from his parent club Chelsea.

Despite this new deal though, it looks likely that the Blues will loan the forward out again next term, with a temporary switch to another Premier League side a distinct possibility.

Newcastle United are believed to be keen on capturing Bamford on a season-long deal, having already been linked with a similar move for Barcelona youth prospect Sandro this week.

But the Magpies could yet face competition from Middlesbrough for the forward, should the Teessiders beat Brentford and claim the third and final promotion spot with victory in the Championship play-off final.

Bamford has thrived under Boro manager Aitor Karanka and could be keen on remaining with the club, while Newcastle’s chances could well hinge on whether they remain in the top-flight this season.

The Magpies are just two points better off than Hull City and a place in the bottom three, with just two games of the Premier League season remaining.
