McClaren now odds-on favourite to take the reins at Newcastle

He may be the ‘Wally with the Brolly’ and the recently-sacked manager of Derby County but Steve McClaren will soon bounce back, according to Ladbrokes.

The bookmaker has the former England manager as the red hot favourite to replace John Carver as Newcastle United manager.

Thanks to a 2-0 win over West Ham on the final day of the season Carver was able to guide the Magpies to Premier League survival but after winning just three of his 19 games in charge owner Mike Ashley looks unlikely to offer the role on a permanent basis.

And, after being relieved of his duties at Pride Park, McClaren is now the odds-on favourite to take the reins at St James’ Park, with Ladbrokes offering a price of 1/3.

McClaren may be something of a figure of fun but with three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League win – all as assistant manager at Manchester United – and a League Cup and Eredivisie title as a manager in his own right the 54-year-old could be the man to bring some much-needed stability to the Toon.

Magpies fans not keen on the former Three Lions boss could be tempted to back second favourite David Moyes, but with the Real Sociedad manager a distant 12/1 it appears to be a one horse race.

Former Lyon man Remi Garde and ex-Swansea boss Michael Laudrup are next in the betting at 14/1 while Ajax manager and serial Premier League target Frank de Boer can be backed at odds of 16/1.

The same odds can be had on Mike Ashley adding to the club’s “Cockney Mafia” tag by appointing recently-departed Brentford boss Mark Warburton while out-of-work Harry Redknapp would also fit that bill and is available at 20/1.

Paul Clement can be backed at 25/1 but with reports suggesting the Real Madrid assistant will replace McClaren at Derby the same odds on either Aitor Karanka or Roberto Di Matteo could prove more tempting.
