How Man Utd can hurt Liverpool and Arsenal’s new title bids

Published:

With this year’s title wrapped up and on its way to Stamford Bridge, the handful of teams in the chasing pack are turning their attention to summer recruitment plans and trying to close the gap.

Liverpool and Arsenal have seemingly settled on the same striker to revive their title chances next season, with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema a long-standing £40m target for the pair.

However, any thoughts of luring the Frenchman to their respective Premier League challenges have taken a turn for the worse, with the news that Manchester United have joined the pursuit of the 77-cap international.

Reports have emerged that Louis van Gaal is keen to secure the Los Blancos front man, who has always seemed on the cusp of a Bernabeu exit despite his stellar record for the club.

With Madrid apparently ready to cash in on Benzema in order to fund a younger replacement, United have emerged as the favourites to secure the player’s services over the course of the summer.

Radamel Falcao has been an unmitigated disaster for the Red Devils during his loan spell from Monaco this term, meaning a space in the club’s striking ranks will open up once he is sent back to France.

With Robin van Persie suffering from a spate of injuries this season, Benzema could see the Old Trafford outfit as his best option, especially as the club are collecting footballing stars like stamps.

A lineup consisting of Benzema, Rooney, Angel Di Maria and new signing Memphis Depay will certainly warrant respect in next season’s Premier League market, while hurting both of their two main rivals in the process.

Benzema has netted 22 times in 45 all-competition appearances for Real Madrid this season, his fifth consecutive campaign scoring 20 or more for the team.
