Liverpool target Dortmund top scorer from potential clearout

Published:

It’s widely perceived that Jurgen Klopp’s imminent departure from Borussia Dortmund will bring about a mass player exodus in the summer and this hasn’t gone unnoticed by eager Premier League clubs.

Like ducks swimming to the edge of the lake sensing an incoming shower of breadcrumbs, the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and co do not want to miss out.

Liverpool in particular are in desperate need of replenishing their striker stocks and having previously been linked to Dortmund’s Italian striker Ciro Immobile, it’s since emerged Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is now the focus.

Unlike Immobile, who has toiled to reproduce the form which saw him top the Serie A scoring charts at Torino last season, Aubameyang is one of the club’s real success stories during a troubled campaign.

Following on from a healthy debut season where he netted 16 times in all competitions, the former Saint-Etienne forward is the club’s top scorer in 2014/15, bagging 22.

Aubameyang is quick, very strong in the air and able to operate as the focal point of a three up front or in one of the wide attacking positions.

The Gabon international is supposedly available at around £15m, which seems a bargain in the circumstances, but whether or not he’ll be attracted by the prospect of Europa League football at Anfield remains to be seen.

With Liverpool missing out on the top four, Memphis Depay has already swerved the Reds in favour of bitter rivals Manchester United, so recruiting the cream of the continent will be no easy task for Brendan Rodgers.

Still, there will be no Champions League theme tune bellowed out at the Westfalenstadion either next season, so Aubameyang may consider the Premier League club an upgrade.
