Liverpool and Manchester City could be involved in some sort of trade off this summer if the latest rumours surrounding their respective wantaway midfielders come home to roost.
The immediate footballing futures of Raheem Sterling and James Milner are the subject of intense speculation as neither player appears willing to sign fresh deals with their current employers.
The England international teammates harbour slightly different ambitions and the interesting thing is that they can probably be fulfilled by a simple trans-Pennines switch in the summer.
Sterling insists he wishes to leave in pursuit of the trophies he feels are more obtainable elsewhere at a club like City, while Milner simply requires the assurances he will be a regular Premier League starter, in line with his ability.
Although the pair are slightly different midfield models, their versatility means they’re used to deployment in several different roles, while they have both played much of their football in the wide positions of a front three in recent seasons and predominantly on the left.
Clearly the players are at different stages of their careers being almost exactly nine years apart in age, but taking the last three Premier League seasons (including the current one) into account, comparing the players shows there is only really one other marked difference.
Apart from dwarfing Milner in the dribbling department, it looks as if Liverpool would be gaining a player of similar stature, stats-wise, with the added bonus of a winning mentality from his time at City.
