Liverpool edging closer to the line where Dutch star is concerned

Liverpool’s summer recruitment drive looks set for a spectacular start should they pull off the the signing of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.

The Sun newspaper is citing reports in Holland which seem to confirm the theory that Anfield is now the most likely destination for Depay, as other interested parties dally.

Depay is very keen on a move to the Premier League and unlike Manchester United, or Paris St-Germain, who are also in the frame, Liverpool’s courtship of the player appears to have been the most intense.

With only a couple of fixtures left in the Eredivisie, Depay is on course for the golden boot award with 21 strikes to his name, to add to his winners’ medal.

Such a prolific contribution from a player who is essentially a winger has brought the World Cup star to the attentions of Europe’s top brass, so should Liverpool tie him down it will be a coup.

As the carpet has begun to slip out from under the Reds’ season, Brendan Rodgers has been adamant the club need to make some “marquee” acquisitions to help propel them back towards title challenging material again.

At the very least the Merseysiders must break back into the top four, something they look set to miss out on this season, barring the prospect of bitter rivals Manchester United handing it to them.

The fact Champions League football will most probably not be on offer, would make Depay’s potential capture more notable and could be the springboard for other big names to follow suit.

Liverpool will be looking to draw a line under this as soon as possible.
