Ladbrokes Challenge Cup: St Helens new favourites for cup glory

Published:

Leigh Centurions have been chalked up as the 66/1 outsiders to lift the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup this year despite a second Super League scalp in as many matches.

The Championship leaders came back from a 24-6 half-time deficit to beat the Wildcats 30-36 and progress to the last eight but a tough away draw against Warrington means Paul Rowley’s side are not fancied to reach the semis.

The second-tier side were priced at 250/1 at the start of the tournament and while those odds have tumbled Centurions fans have been warned against holding their breath for a Wembley date.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Leigh fans dreaming of Wembley will need to upset even greater odds following the draw but with confidence running high we can’t fully rule out more cup magic at Warrington.”

St Helens are the new 7/4 outright market leaders and their reward for a comprehensive 46-6 victory over York City Knights is a home tie against Widnes, while Leigh’s hosts Warrington have been inserted as the 11/4 second favourites.

Current Super League leaders and reigning champions Leeds complete the top three in the betting at 5/2 after their 48-16 rout of Huddersfield saw them paired with Hull FC for the final eight.

Hull KR can be backed at 10/1 but will fancy their chances at home to Catalans (12/1) after dumping 19-time winners Wigan out over the weekend.

Hull FC (16/1) and Widnes (40/1) complete the line-up and while it is Saints who now look most likely to go on to Wembley glory there are plenty hoping Leigh can continue to defy the odds.
