Klopp u-turn leaves gate swinging for potential Liverpool move

Liverpool fans disillusioned with Brendan Rodgers’ tenure have been given renewed hope that the Northern Irishman could yet be replaced by one of football’s most infectious characters this summer.

Outgoing Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, had looked to be out of any potential frame to take the Anfield reins having decided to take a six-month sabbatical from the game.

However, German newspaper Bild are now reporting plans for a hiatus from football have been shelved, leaving the possibility of taking the Liverpool job wide open once more.

Of course, as it stands, there is not yet a vacancy on Merseyside with Rodgers safe for now at least according to club owners Fenway Sports Group.

Although these assurances have been granted in the immediate term, results of an upcoming review by the American consortium into Rodgers’ latest campaign at Liverpool could yet see the Northern Irishman handed his P45.

Having brushed so close to the Premier League title last season, Liverpool have once again fallen by the wayside in top-flight terms, ending up sixth with the bitter taste of a final-day humiliation at Stoke still swilling around.

A swift exit from the Champions League and a selection of his summer signings enduring very poor seasons at Anfield, have also ramped up the pressure on Rodgers.

Klopp’s recent history of rebuilding German giants Dortmund and turning them into double title winners and European Cup finalists is a blueprint sure to appeal to John W Henry and co.

The charismatic German would have to be first choice should Rodgers pay the price for Liverpool’s regression this season.

Klopp has one last chance to sign off from the Westfalenstadion with silverware this weekend, when his marginal 13/10 favourites take on Wolfsburg in the German Cup final.
