Kamara: Advocaat has shown managers aren’t just mercenaries

Published:

In an age of multi-billion television deals, greedy agents and fickle footballers it’s easy to feel disconnected from the glittering cast of the Premier League.

But as this week has shown us there are moments that will soften the hearts of even the most hardened operators in world football.

Step forward, Dick Advocaat.

The former Netherlands boss has pretty much been there and done it all across the globe but even he couldn’t contain his emotions when Sunderland secured Premier League survival against Arsenal on Wednesday.

And that, according to Chris Kamara, is great to see.

He told Ladbrokes News: “Dick Advocaat got very emotional. People think football managers are mercenaries but as I tell people all the time it takes over your life.

“It’s too easy to say they don’t care and they’ll just move on but those scenes in midweek prove that no matter how much you’ve done in the game you still care.

“It means more to managers than just the money.”

As a result of their dogged display at the Emirates fans of the Black Cats can sit back and enjoy their trip to face champions Chelsea.

Instead, Hull and arch-rivals Newcastle are left to fight it out with the Magpies 4/1 with Ladbrokes to go through the trap door.
