Irish 2000 Guineas: 40/1 shot tipped to chase Gleneagles home

Aidan O’Brien’s Gleneagles is practically impossible to oppose at 2/5 in the Irish 2000 Guineas, after the Galileo colt won the Newmarket equivalent, which was probably a better race, without really hitting top gear.
The fact that Richard Hannon’s Ivawood, who finished 3l back in third that day, is next best in the betting at a top price of 5/1 with Ladbrokes only furthers Gleneagles’ claims, which already include O’Brien’s record of five wins over the past seven runnings of this.
Furthermore, all five of those winners where the Ballydoyle magician’s shortest-priced representatives in the field. With that in mind, 2/5 really does look like a backable price.
However, here at news.ladbrokes we know there are plenty among the punting public who wouldn’t back an odds-on shot if their lives depended on it, so it is incumbent upon us to locate each-way value at the Curragh.
As it is, Ballydoyle is the place to go for that too!
Prior to last year, when 14/1 Johan Strauss finished fourth, O’Brien’s horses had taken third spot in four Irish 2000 Guineas in a row, with three of them paying out each-way backers at 20/1 or more.
Gleneagles and Ivawood take so much out of the market that Roger Varian’s Belardo is next in the betting at 10/1, while O’Brien back-up pair The Warrior and Smuggler’s Cove are all the way down at 40/1 each.
Smuggler’s Cove looks to have had too many chances, losing three times in a row, including against Belardo in September, and only has a maiden and an All-Weather win to his name from six starts.
The fat that the trainer’s son Joseph, who won this three times in a row between 2011 and 2013, has picked The Warrior suggests the other horse in the Michael Tabor silks, besides Gleneagles, is the one to be on each way.
The Warrior will have to reverse form with Dermot Weld’s 14/1 shot Tombelaine, who beat O’Brien’s runner by more than 5l at the Curragh earlier this month, but the ground will be markedly better than the heavy stuff experienced that day, so there’s hope at a huge price.
