Farewell Stevie G: Steven Gerrard’s top 5 Liverpool goals

Published:

Steven Gerrard will captain Liverpool at Anfield for the final time this weekend before setting off for the sunshine of Los Angeles and the new challenge of MLS.

With two games remaining in his Reds career there is plenty of time for the magnificent midfielder to conjure up another of his trademark thunder strikes but just in case he falls short here are the top five goals of his long and illustrious Liverpool career to date, according to Ladbrokes News.

West Ham – FA Cup Final 2006

When West Ham took a shock 2-0 lead at the Millennium Stadium Reds fans thought a chance at FA Cup glory had slipped them by only for Djibril Cisse and of course Steven Gerrard to level the game early in the second half.

Paul Konchesky’s 64th-minute strike seemed to have given the Irons the upper hand though, until this injury-time wonder strike from Gerrard set Liverpool on the road to cup victory.

Olympiakos – Champions League group stage 2005

On the final day of the group stage Liverpool needed to beat the Greek giants by two clear goals to progress to the knockout stages and had their hopes dashed by a Rivaldo goal on 26 minutes.

Strikes from Sinama Pongolle and Neil Mellor set up a tense finish before a stunning effort from Gerrard in the 86th minute seals the Reds’ fate and ultimately set them on the way to European glory.

Man United – League Cup 2001

Gerrard has scored numerous important goals for Liverpool over the years but it is his strikes against bitter rivals United that have him kissing Sky cameras and holding a special place in his heart.

This thunderbolt from all of 25 yards in a 2-0 win over the Red Devils in 2001 is perhaps the pick of his strikes against the Old Trafford club.

Middlesbrough – Premier League 2005

Unlike many of Gerrard’s super strikes this goal held little importance other than earning the Reds a point against Boro in 2005.

However, while it may not have won them a cup or earned progression in a tournament it is arguably the finest strike of his illustrious career.

Manchester City – Premier League 2013

Another strike that probably won’t make the top 10 most important Gerrard strikes list but given the calibre of the opposition and the fluidity and force with which he struck the ball to leave England goalkeeper Joe Hart rooted means it warrants a place on our list.
