Dump Aguero for Leicester striker as best scorer bet this weekend

Published:

With Sergio Aguero scoring eight in five Manchester City matches, he would be the popular choice for many if asked which player is most likely to score in the Premier League during this weekend’s round of fixtures.

Man City travel to Swansea, with Aguero odds-on at 4/5 to net at the Liberty Stadium.

However, a more under-the-radar prediction for a goalscorer in the 36th round of Premier League fixtures is Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.

Vardy hasn’t been the biggest contributor in Leicester’s upturn in form of late, which has seen them win six of their last seven top-flight matches.

He may have only netted two goals, but his underlying statistics suggest that a far more productive appearance on the scoresheet is not far away.

From the time that Leicester started their resurgence, Vardy has fired in 19 shots on goal from inside opposition 18-yard boxes, with 10 hitting the target.

To put this into context, Aguero is the only striker in the top flight to have more total shots in the same period than Vardy has had from inside boxes.

Leicester visit Sunderland next and the Black Cats have had trouble on home soil of late against speedy strikers.

With Gabby Agbonlahor in their ranks, Aston Villa won 4-0 at the Stadium Of Light in March and then last month Yannick Bolasie inspired Crystal Palace to a 4-1 victory.

Vardy is arguably quicker than both of these and Sunderland do look short of pace at the back, whoever starts from John O’Shea, Wes Brown or Santiago Vergini. They have only kept clean sheets in two of their last nine too.

The anytime-scorer market has Vardy priced up at a tempting 23/10 to score in the 90 minutes at Sunderland, with 13/2 also looking on the large side that he nets the final goal of the game.

Vardy has been on target in Leicester’s last three away matches and each of the last two at West Brom and Burnley have concluded the scoring.
