Could Dan Jarvis be the joker in Next Labour Leader pack?

Published:

We mentioned yesterday that there could be a fair amount of collateral damage following the results of this year’s UK General Election.

And overnight and into this morning it appears that assertion will ring true with Labour leader Ed Miliband expected to resign from his position.

It follows a calamitous display at the polls for his party with the SNP wiping out Labour’s powerbase in Scotland and the likelihood that the Conservatives will hold on to power and form a majority government.

And now the question turns to who will replace the Doncaster North MP.

In our opinion, if you’re looking for a spot of value, back Dan Jarvis before it’s too late. Here’s our rundown of the top four in the market:

Andy Burnham – 5/2

Shadow health secretary ran for the leadership previously, only making it to the second round of four before support evaporated.

One of Miliband’s key allies, his close association with such a disappointing election campaign is perhaps one reason to swerve this bet.

Chuka Umunna – 5/2

Has long been regarded as a rising star and it’s said the Streatham MP even has the backing of Tony Blair to be the next party leader.

Yvette Cooper – 7/2

The wife of the deposed Ed Balls can forge her own path now and it’s easy to see why she’s a forerunner in this market.

Held on to her seat with a 55 per cent share of the vote and cannot be discounted.

Dan Jarvis – 5/1

Our outside pick has seen his odds tumble in the last few months.

As big as 16/1 in April the ex-Special Forces MP would appeal to an audience that have turned their backs on Labour. Reports in March suggested he’d be up for the fight and can rely on the support of senior figures.
