Cherries want former Man Utd star to spearhead their attack

Bournemouth’s plans for the Premier League are already taking a clear shape, with the club making former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov a prime target in their summer transfer strategy.
The Bulgarian is facing an uncertain future at current club Monaco, who have just fallen foul of FIFA’s Financial Fair Play rules and will only be allowed to register a squad of 22 players next season.
Eddie Howe, who wants to bring in top-flight experience to his side for their first Premier League foray, has earmarked Berbatov as a potential coup once the transfer window opens and hopes to land the languid front man for nothing.
The former Tottenham hero is rumoured to be interested in a return to England, but could find that Bournemouth’s cash reserves limit his ability to earn big bucks.
Berbatov is on around £100,000 per week with the French club and would struggle to eek that much out of Bournemouth should he move to the south coast.
Displays in the Champions League this season, where Berbatov scored in the knockout over Arsenal, show that the 34-year-old is still perfectly capable of performing at the top level and could play an important role in Howe’s footballing philosophy.
Able to drop off and create, as well as lead the line, Berbatov’s style suits the Dean Court club’s attacking and creative mode of play, while he would need more than the eight goals he has managed this season if he wants to make a real impact on the south coast.
Who joins Bournemouth and the other automatically promoted club, Watford, in the top flight is still to be decided, with Middlesbrough currently the 5/4 favourites for overall play-off victory according to Ladbrokes.
