Australian carries strong form and huge price into Crowne Plaza

If anything was to dispel the thought that golf was just a game your granddad played to get out of the house for a few hours on a Sunday, then the PGA Tour winner’s list over the last month should leave little doubt that youth is prospering on the fairways.
Since Jordan Spieth romped to Masters victory in mid-April, 20-somethings have won four of the six tournaments held on the other side of the Atlantic.
As the schedule rolls on to Texas for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, any hopes the youngsters had of keeping their good times going should have faded.
For starters Rory McIlroy, who has won two of the last three events in the US, is playing the European Tour this week, while Spieth, who gets 5/1 favouritism in the Northern Irishman’s absence, hasn’t quite fired since his Augusta coming-of-age.
Besides, the Crowne Plaza has suited the elder gent in recent times. Not since Sergio Garcia in 2001 has a player under 30 taken the title.
With experience clearly counting for plenty here, Zach Johnson may be worth a look at 16/1. The Iowan is a two-time champion at the tournament, winning most recently in 2012, and arrives in the Lone Star State with two top-20 finishes in his last two outings.
The Australian enjoys playing at Colonial having finished fifth in last year’s edition of the Crowne Plaza, while two other top-10 finishes in his 12 career starts at the tournament certainly make an impressive case.
Current form is just as striking for the Queenslander, who has finished tied for fifth in the World Match Play and shared eighth in the Players Championship in his last two tournament starts.
