Arsenal legend joins McClaren in Newcastle job contention

In keeping with several bookmakers up and down the land Ladbrokes have cut Patrick Vieira’s odds to become the next permanent manager of Newcastle.

The former Arsenal midfield general is now available at 7/2, behind early frontrunner and odds-on favourite Steve McClaren at 1/3, recently let go by Derby.

Vieira has impressed in his role as the head coach of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad since hanging up his boots as a player with the club.

The Arsenal legend picked up his first silverware with City’s U21s this season and his one-year rolling contract is up for renewal again this summer.

A hugely respected figure within English football thanks to a glittering career skippering the Gunners to multiple Premier League titles and FA Cups, Vieira has always been earmarked to move into management.

Perhaps the 38-year-old may see this as the perfect opportunity to make the transistion, although at a big club like Newcastle it would certainly be a baptism of fire.

Rumours still abound that former England manager McClaren has been lined up to take the St James’ Park reins ever since Alan Pardew up sticks for Crystal Palace in January.

McClaren’s vast experience as a manager will have obvious attraction to Magpies owner Mike Ashley as the club desperately need a stabilising influence to ensure the same landslide in results doesn’t occur next season.

Under caretaker boss John Carver, still officially in his role, Newcastle only secured their Premier League status on a nerve-jangling final day.
