The Best and Worst of football’s April Fool’s Day hoaxes

Love them or loathe them, we think it’s absolutely spiffing to see a great British institution alive and well. We are, of course, talking about April Fool’s Day and the weird and wonderful hoaxes it produces.
And just for your pleasure we’ve compiled a list of some of the best and worst of the bunch to emerge from the sporting world.
Yeah, this was never really going to take off, was it? The fact the Standard tried to paint Ashley Cole’s departure from Arsenal to Chelsea in a favourable light immediately had even the most gullible among us smelling the proverbial bull faeces.

Liverpool need someone to replace the glass-like Daniel Sturridge and there’s one former club legend who could fit the bill. What’s not to believe? Oh, the story refers to 37-year-old Emile Heskey. Good joke.

Talking of Reds heroes from the past, step forward…Titi Camara. The cheeky cult figure promised prospective buyers of his book a bit of free sustenance from a well-known bakery.
Guinea’s former Minister for Sport was obviously feeling a bit flush.

One of the more intricate April Fools came from the Daily Mail who ‘broke’ the news that Arsenal v Liverpool would be the first match where we can stream both captains’ pre-match team talks. They even invented Social Media tool Periscope (this is made-up too, right?) to make the whole thing seem more plausible. Personally, we think it’s a shame the whole thing was a ruse and that we won’t get to hear the inspirational thoughts of Jordan Henderson.

And now we come to more Wayne Rooney fakery. Fresh from being ‘knocked out’ by Phil Bardsley the Man United and England star had to face another embarrassing revelation this morning – he’s got a Liver bird tattoo.
Apparently Roo’s failure to score against arch-rivals Liverpool last month meant he’d lost a bet and had to get inked with the symbol.
