Win over Sunderland “would put Carver in line for Newcastle job”

It’s a fixture where Sunderland have found plenty of joy recently and Black Cats fans will be hoping for more of the same when they take on Newcastle in the upcoming Tyne-Wear derby.

However, the Magpies will be equally keen to put one over their rivals having suffered four straight defeats against the Mackems.

We caught up with Ladbrokes ambassador Chris Kamara to get his thoughts on an intriguing contest where there will be plenty at stake.

Kammy said: “Sunderland will be relishing this game as it’s one where they’ve had the upper hand recently.

“But they need to start winning games of football. There’s so much riding on this. To lose to their near neighbours would be a hammer blow in the fight against relegation.”

But the Wearsiders’ battle to beat the drop under the stewardship of Dick Advocaat isn’t the only plotline running through this contest.

The Dutchman’s opposite number also has plenty to play for with Newcastle’s interim boss well aware of the significance of this match-up.

“The other thing to consider is John Carver” Kammy added.

“Newcastle haven’t had great results lately but if they could nick a win at the Stadium of Light then that would put him right in the frame to land the job permanently.

“This is the game that could restore the fans’ faith in him. “

Carver’s side are 21/10 to break their poor recent run against Sunderland and take all three points on enemy turf.
