Victory for Rangers and Celtic as Old Firm voted fiercest derby

Rangers’ expulsion to the lower echelons of Scottish football has meant football has been robbed of more renewals of the fiercest derby outside of England, according to our latest poll.

The Old Firm Derby with Celtic was voted as the rivalry that stirs the most fire in the belly by Ladbrokes News readers.

Taking 35 per cent of votes, the clash between the Glasgow sides only just squeaked victory with the Kitalarasi between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray (24 per cent), and the Superclasico which pitches Boca Juniors against River Plate (21 per cent) not far behind.

But the emotions that are brought out between the two clubs north of the border aren’t limited to the fans, with Celtic’s Kris Commons recently yearning for another clash with the Gers.

“I want them back up as soon as possible because the games with Rangers are the best games,” he told the Scottish Express.

“It makes people want to get out of bed in the middle of the night in Australia,” he continued.

The two sides have only met once in the past three years with Rangers’ financial woes hitting hard.

But with Stuart McCall’s men set to compete in the promotion play-offs as they strive to reach the Scottish Premiership again, it will only be a matter of time before the clashes are commonplace again.

One thing is for sure, if they can all match the ferocity of their 2011 clash in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, then we are sure to see some belters in the future…
