How Twitter reacted to Aston Villa’s FA Cup win over Liverpool
Published:Liverpool’s season came to a shuddering halt this weekend with the Reds going down 2-1 to Aston Villa in an FA Cup semi-final few expected the Merseysiders to lose.
But come Sunday at Wembley it was all about Christian Benteke, Fabian Delph and a certain Tim Sherwood.
That’s not to say Liverpool’s soon-to-be-departed icon Steven Gerrard was not a topic of discussion, with the 34-year-old featuring fairly prominently on social media.
Here is the best of what was said on Twitter.
Ahead of the big game, Opta Joe was offering up the kind of stats that must have had Stevie G and Reds fans smiling.
12 – Steven Gerrard has scored more Premier League goals against Aston Villa than any other side in his career (12). Return.

They were not the only ones either, with Squawka highlighting Liverpool’s fine semi-final record.

The game kicked off and those of the Merseyside persuasion were soon celebrating with Philippe Coutinho scoring the opener.

Replays, and a rather nasal-sounding Michael Owen, later confirmed it went in via a significant deflection.
@SkyBet https://t.co/9mqr9Ajri0 just wondering how this was given as a coutinho goal? Surely if the ball is not on target it can’t be given.

They were not ahead for long, however, with Villa levelling things up via a far from surprising source.

At half-time, the prognosis from a Liverpool legend was not a good one for the Merseysiders.
Villa the better side in the first half. Grealish looks a great talent, Benteke and Delph excellent.

And any Liverpool fears were soon confirmed when Aston Villa took the lead after the break through Fabian Delph.

Liverpool tried to get back into the game, with Gerrard going close with a header. Mario Balotelli then had an equaliser ruled out for offside, when he wasn’t.

It was all in vain, however, with Liverpool ultimately deserved losers.
And so the Gerrard trolling began.
Some reminded him of Jose Mourinho’s words.

Others simply wheeled out Ian Beale.
