Southampton looking to go double Dutch this summer

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is hoping to boost his squad by enticing two of his countrymen to St Mary’s this summer, according to reports.

The Saints gaffer is set to launch a double raid on Newcastle United for Holland stars Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat, the Daily Mirror has claimed.

With right-back Nathaniel Clyne expected to leave the south coast for Manchester United this summer and goalkeeper Fraser Forster set to miss a large chunk of the new campaign with a long-term knee injury Koeman is on the lookout for reinforcements and hopes the uncertainly at St James’ Park will help his cause.

Koeman is well aware of Janmaat’s abilities, having worked with the defender at previous club Feyenoord before sanctioning a £5m sale to the Magpies, and with Southampton a club on the rise and likely to be able to offer European football next term the one-time Manchester United target is likely to tempted by a reunion with his former boss.

Krul has also been coveted by a number of clubs in recent years as one of the few Newcastle players to see his stock rise during that period.

The 27-year-old has only ever been a Newcastle player throughout his senior career – minus the odd loan spell – but knows he may have to leave if he too is to realise his ambition of playing continental football.

With five games still to play Southampton retain faint hopes of breaking into the Premier League’s top four and securing a Champions league berth.

However, with Manchester City rediscovering their winning formula at the weekend it appears a Europa League spot is the best Saints can hope for, but with Newcastle just seven points above the relegation zone Europe’s secondary competition should be plenty of enticement for the Dutch duo.
