Snooker World Championship: 3 men who can ground The Rocket

Published:

The pinnacle of the snooker season looms and as usual it will be one man in everyone’s sights as the World Championships take place at Sheffield’s iconic Crucible Theatre.

Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan has won two of the last three editions and needs just one more world crown to draw level with legendary cue wielders Steve Davis and Ray Reardon on six.

The current UK Champion tops the betting at 5/2, but the competition is stiffer than ever for the Crucible title this year, with these three men particularly fancied to give the Rocket a run for his money.

Mark Selby @ 7/1

As the defending champion it’s a little surprising to see the Jester fourth in the betting to retain his title, but Ladbrokes customers should be rubbing their hands with glee.

The world number one may have struggled to find his best form at the other Triple Crown events this season, but he has since rectified this by claiming two ranking titles in as many months, storming to the China Open latterly when thrashing Gary Wilson 10-2.

Judd Trump @ 6/1

A beaten finalist in 2011 as the new kid on the block, Trump is blessed with a similar flair to O’Sullivan and is now learning to harness it properly.

The Bristolian was a beaten finalist at the UK’s this season before defeating the Rocket at the World Grand Prix final 10-7 just a few weeks ago, so will be extremely confident of his chances in Yorkshire.

Michael White @ 66/1

The 23-year-old Welshman first captured the limelight when making the quarter-finals in Sheffield back in 2013 as a precocious young player.

Having improved his world ranking over the last four seasons he now stands at world number 27 and shot to prominence recently by winning successive tournaments to fully announce himself as a contender.

The Indian Open and Sky Shoot Out winner could be the dark horse to mount this spring.
