Real Madrid defender blatant about wish for Man United move

Fabio Coentrao has got one thing on his mind this summer and that’s orchestrating a much–speculated over move to Manchester United after tumbling down the pecking order at Real Madrid.

Coentrao hasn’t featured for Los Blancos since being subbed shortly after half-time during the Champions League loss at home to Schalke on March 10th, while he’s only been afforded seven La Liga appearances by Carlo Ancelotti this term.

For a player of the Portuguese international’s stature this situation is clearly unsustainable, leading Coentrao to make some pretty candid comments over his future desires.

“I have already shown an interest in playing there [Manchester United],” said Coentrao. “It is one of the best clubs in the world, a club I admire a lot. It would be an honour to play there.”

It’s of little surprise the left-back has chosen to single out the 13-time Premier League champions either, who are heavily fancied to return to Europe’s top competition next season with odds of 2/11 to make the top four.

The links between Coentrao and United first surfaced during David Moyes’ troubled Old Trafford reign, although soon after the Scot’s departure the club sanctioned the deal for Southampton’s highly-rated teenager Luke Shaw instead.

Current manager Louis van Gaal’s involvement in the £27m deal is thought to have been limited though.

Potential is one thing, however Shaw has struggled to hold down a slot under LVG which widens the scope for a seasoned left-back to come into the club.

Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo have all occupied stints on the left side of a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 for the Dutch tactician this season, without being specialist left full-backs, or even full-backs at all in Young’s case.
