Brief highs curtailed by prolonged lows have brought Newcastle’s relationship with their downtrodden fans to breaking point.

Calls for a change at board level, where owner Mike Ashley is the target of unwavering anger, look unlikely to be listened to, with reports emerging that a far-reaching clear out of the playing staff will instead be the course of action by the club this summer.

With the Geordies at greater risk of relegation than their 14/1 odds for the drop state thanks to seven straight losses, it could be that such a firesale is needed if the north east outfit wind up in the Championship next term.

Should they survive though, the strategy becomes a little more curious, as no first teamer seems safe from the chop.
