Glenn Murray’s opening goal against Manchester City on Monday night not only left Sky Blues fans stunned but also the majority of Ladbrokes customers.
That is according to fresh data from the bookmaker which shows that just four per cent of all first goalscorer bets placed on the game went on the Crystal Palace striker.
Punters appeared to throw the form book out of the window with the 31-year-old shunned by the majority of customers despite a great run of goals.
Murray’s opener against City was his fifth in as many games, having previously scored first in Palace’s 3-1 win over West Ham.
Instead, many looked to reputation rather than form with 70 per cent of first goalscorer bets coming in for Sergio Aguero despite his recent run of six games without a goal for Manchester City.
There was some solace for the Sky Blues backers though with Yaya Toure, a popular choice for an any time goal, delivering the goods for 10 per cent of customers betting in that particular market.
Few appeared to have expected a City defeat, however, with 65 per cent of win/draw/win bets placed on the Citizens coming out on top despite some recent poor results.
Those who had noted Palace’s strong recent run of three wins in four Premier League outings were duly rewarded though with 15 per cent of stakes in this market going on a win for the Eagles while the draw attracted 20 per cent.
There were evidently some punters predicting a repeat of last season’s Crystanbul thriller between Liverpool and Palace which saw the Reds fading title hopes all but extinguished with a 3-3 draw.
A total of three per cent of all correct score bets went on a repeat finish while a canny seven per cent were on a 2-1 win for Palace.
Manchester United are next up for City while their south London conquerors face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light – time to back a Murray opener?
