Man United could beat Liverpool in race to sign World Cup winner

Manchester United have emerged as shock front-runners to land wantaway Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira this summer.

The World Cup winner has been a key figure during his five years at the Bernabeu but the arrivals of Asier Illarramendi and countryman Toni Kroos have seen the 28-year-old struggle for first team action of late.

Arsenal are long-time admirers of the Germany international but recent reports linked the holding midfielder with a move to Liverpool.

However, after falling behind in the race to finish in the top four the Anfield outfit could now lose out to bitter rivals Manchester United.

With the Old Trafford club now fully expected to qualify for the Champions League manager Louis van Gaal requires cover and competition for Michael Carrick and with Khedira available on a free transfer, few players fit the bill better than the Madrid ace.

News of a potential swoop for Khedira comes hot on the heels of claims that the transfer of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton to United is a “done deal”.

According to Daily Mirror journalist David McDonnell, a deal has been agreed between the two clubs and the England right back’s arrival at Old Trafford is now just a formality.

Southampton had been keen to retain Clyne’s services but after the defender revealed his desire to play in the Champions League manager Ronald Koeman looks to have admitted defeat in the battle to keep him at St Mary’s.

Van Gaal’s men will attempt to keep their current winning streak going when they travel to Chelsea next time out and the Red Devils can be backed at 16/5 to build on their derby day success with a win over the champions–elect.
