Hipster Tipster: Why it’s all about ‘Super’ Mario Gomez this week

Published:

While everyone was cooing over Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, I have to admit that I was a little bored by the Champions League this week, watching the games from the comfort of my regular spot in the mock German bierkeller located near my house.

As I imbibed my third glass of organically-brewed Wiessbier, I had something of a revelation – I’m bored of Europe’s premier cup competition.

So I’ve decided to cut my losses and instead focus on its far less attractive sister – the Europa League.

It was there that a found a new hero in the floppy hair and gangly limbs of forgotten Die Mannschaft hero Mario Gomez – he’s even got his own song.

Though in truth, it’s not quite up there with the one given to Luca Toni during his two-year spell with Bayern Munich.

The star of Fiorentina’s 2-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv, the German and his Florence-based teammates feature in my latest offering – enjoy!

Werder Bremen to beat Paderborn @ 8/5

Bremen delivered the goods with a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Hamburg last weekend and with Paderborn claiming just a single victory from their last eight Bundesliga games, it’s the visitors who must be backed to thrive again here.

Sevilla to beat Vallecano @ 2/5

The Andalusians will be on a high after dumping Champions League rejects Zenit out of the Europa League this week and are on a run of 22 games without defeat at home, having most recently held Barcelona a draw. Vallecano stand no chance surely.

Fiorentina to beat Cagliari @ 4/9

La Viola may not have been in the best of form in recent weeks but after a 2-0 victory in the Europa League this week, the visit of a Cagliari side on a run of four consecutive defeats should see the Florence club back to their best in Italy.

Lyon to beat Reims @ 3/4

Still in the running to usurp Zlatan and PSG to the Ligue 1 crown, Lyon will be confident of seeing off Reims, having beaten their hosts in each of their previous three meetings. Their hosts are not out of the relegation mire just yet either, having lost four of their last five league games.
