2000 Guineas: Hannon fancy cut to shreds after Craven win

Richard Hannon’s Kool Kompany took a giant leap in the 2000 Guineas market, from 100/1 to 20/1, after a shock win in Newmarket’s 1m Craven Stakes.
The son of Jeremy was sent off at 14/1, the second-highest priced horse in a seven-runner field, despite winning five of his first six starts between April and June of last year. A poor run over 6f at the same track in October, on soft ground, can now be seen as merely a blip.
Hannon also saddled the well backed Craven favourite Moheet, who went off at 2/1 under Frankie Detorri, but the High Chaparral colt drifted from 14/1 to 33/1 with Ladbrokes for the Guineas after finishing more than three lengths behind his stablemate in third.
The pair were split by Barry Hills’ Nafaqa, who stayed at 33/1 for the return to Suffolk next month following his 2l loss.
Aidan O’Brien’s favourite Gleneagles was also deemed a winner by Ladbrokes, with the bookies cutting the five-time winner from 2/1 to 7/4 for Newmarket’s main event following the Group 3 tussle, which hasn’t produced a Guineas winner since Hills took both with Haafhd in 2004.
In the 1000 Guineas betting, runaway Ballydoyle favourite Found was nibbled in from 5/2 to 2/1, despite the French-bred filly not being seen on a racecourse since October.
O’Brien doesn’t have as good a record in the 1000 Guineas as he does in some other Classics, taking it just twice so far in his illustrious career and once in the past nine seasons.
Even that 2012 success came with 25/1 shot Homecoming Queen, and not his 13/8 favourite Maybe, so he has little pedigree in the race beyond Virginia Waters’ stylish 2004 victory.
That being said, Found earned rave reviews when winning on her last start, October’s Group 1 Total Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp over a mile, so she could prove the exception this year.
