How Twitter reacted to Chelsea, PSG and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

On a night in which Chelsea and Jose Mourinho’s treble dreams were dashed by a pair of Brazilians, Twitter was awash with comment.
Four goals, a sending off and talking points aplenty ensued over 120 occasionally pulsating minutes – here is how social media responded.
Ahead of kick-off, one supporter was getting plenty of attention.

But it was another rather rather tall personalty with a penchant for spouting rubbish who was the talk of the town before the game started. Mind you, a lot of that talk centred on how bad he had been against Jose Mourinho over the years.

Zlatan duly delivered his familiar duff performance, though the Big Swede was dismissed early on in controversial circumstances after a rather robust challenge on Chelsea midfielder Oscar.
Most people felt the decision to give Ibrahimovic a straight red card was harsh with one Liverpool player concerned at the “tactics” being employed by Mourinho’s team.

The statistics did not paint the PSG striker in a great light though as he moved level with Edgar Davids as the European Cup’s ultimate bad boys.

More controversy ensued before half-time too with Mourinho, Diego Costa and everyone watching at home convinced that Chelsea have been denied a stonewall penalty.
At this point, it was pretty clear that the referee was having a nightmare.

And the replays did not do the Dutch official any favours either.

The second half started with little in the way of notable action, as PSG did their best to find a break through, despite being a man down, of course.
Once again, the referee came in for criticism with Costa guilty of a foul just as bad as Ibrahimovic’s earlier challenge but only worth of a yellow from the match official.

With the clock ticking towards a classic Jose Mourinho Champions League bore draw, Gary Cahill popped up with a goal that helped the Chelsea defence maintain their rather prolific season – as this rather nifty infographic demonstrates.

The longer the game went on, the more people seeming to be concerned with the performance of Bjorn Kuipers – we learnt his name – with Louis Saha leading the charge.

But just when it looked like Chelsea would bore their way to another narrow knockout stage victory in the Champions League, David Luiz came back to bite the Special One in the behind.

Having taken the game to extra time, PSG soon found themselves on the back foot again, after giving away a penalty with an inexplicable handball.
Eden Hazard does at least make it entertaining by refused to look at what he was kicking or where he was kicking it to.

Not everyone was happy about the spot-kick either, which had Mourinho’s traditional laborious Champions League performance back on track.

But just when it seemed like the Blues were set to progress, Thiago Silva arrived up to save the day with a looping header late in extra time that more than made up for the penalty he had given away.
