How Twitter reacted to Arsenal’s Cup win over Manchester United

Published:

In a game jam-packed with dodgy defending, dives, a few yellows, one red and a few goals besides, Arsenal progressed to a Wembley showdown with either Bradford City or Reading.

But rather than look forward to what will most likely be a drab Wembley affair, we are still reveling in the antics of last night’s Old Trafford encounter.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the Gunners’ – and most notably Danny Welbeck’s – victory over Manchester United.

Ahead of kick-off much of the talk surrounded Welbz and whether the misfiring forward would have an impact at his old stomping ground.

Some predicted a rather upsetting Old Trafford reunion between the 24-year-old and the many Red Devils fans who had made the long trip up from London.

Others even saw a dismissal coming…

United, meanwhile, seemed keen to promote a rather unusual figure as their part-Lenin, part-Gerard Butler in 300 leader.

Once the game kicked off, Arsenal drew first-blood, though the goal came from a rather unusual source.

Mind you, most people were too busy realising that the Spaniard bears more than a passing resemblance to a beanpole Premier League legend.

Even Piers Morgan, the worst Arsenal fan in the entire world, was happy for one fleeting moment.

But obviously, because this is Arsenal, it was never likely to last with Wayne Rooney scoring an equaliser for the hosts moments later.

Ladbrokes summed it up best.

Morgan’s mood quickly shifted with Laurent Koscielny the man to blame.

But Piers was not the only one to lay into the Frenchman.

The first-half petered out into a series of misplaced passes and free-kicks. Still, the second half would see things improve surely?

Nope.

The second period saw Welbeck capitalise on a terrible back pass from Antonio Valencia to give the Gunners the lead again.

Welbz was subsequently booed by the Old Trafford faithful but don’t worry, because he had one rather hairy business magnate backing him up online.

And then the mocking started…

And pretty much kept going for the rest of the game…

Fortunately help was at hand for Manchester United in the form of record-signing Angel Di Maria. Surely he would be able to turn the tide in the Red Devils’ favour? Oh boy…

It turns out the referee Michael Oliver does not like people touching him, especially not Argentine wingers who he has only just booked for diving.

In fact, His reaction drew comparisons with one social media legend.

It didn’t matter though, because United still had Adnan Januzaj and he is great.

The Belgium international seemed to channel the recently departed Di Maria, going on a trademark surging run that ended with a trademark crap dive and booking.

United pressed but in the end the game belonged to one man and one man alone.

Not that Andy Tate was bothered.
