Tshwane Open: Danish livewire can take open field to task

As the European Tour stays in South Africa after a brief interlude for the co-sanctioned Cadillac Championship in the US, the Tshwane Open moves to a new course for its third running of the event.
Ross Fisher is both the defending champion and market leader, at 12/1 with Ladbrokes, but in truth heads a wafer-thin field in a tournament of unknowns.
Not only is the tournament being held at the Pretoria Country Club in Waterkloof for the first time, but it is also the biggest event that particular club has ever hosted, leaving little form to go on from history.
Throw in that the highest ranked player in the world that will tee it up in Pretoria is 16/1 second favourite Andy Sullivan at 57th and just how much of a needles in the haystacks event this is becomes clearer.
Nonetheless, with all of the field bar the first four in the betting priced up at 20/1 or better it could be that finding that needle reaps plentiful reward.
Danish livewire Morten Orum Madsen could provide one such golden ticket at a price of 33/1.
The 26-year-old is certainly an entertaining punt, with the ability to play supreme error-free golf supplemented with an equal likelihood of blowing up for eye-watering bogeys.
His opening round at last week’s Africa Open is a prime example of that. His 71 included six birdies, four pars, four bogeys, two eagles and a double and triple bogey each.
He followed that smorgasbord score up with a 64 and a 66 over the weekend to claim a tie for third and, three weeks prior, was Rory McIlroy’s closest challenger going into the final round of the Omega Desert Classic before ending T4.
With a 13th and an eighth place in the previous two editions of the Tshwane, it could well be his time to enter the winner’s enclosure.
