Top 5 Newcastle v Manchester United Premier League hammerings

Published:

Manchester United visit Tyneside this Wednesday for a Premier League game that they can ill-afford to lose, given the way the battle for a top four finish has heated up in recent weeks.

Fortunately in Newcastle they face a side that has surrendered to the Red Devils with alarming regularity in the English top-flight over the years and another away day whitewash could be on the cards at St James’ Park.

Newcastle may fancy their chances, however, with United decidedly out of sorts and the Toon boosted by their recent 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Whatever the case, goals look likely and with both sides boasting the capacity to capitulate, we could see a one-sided contest to rival these five north east thrashings.

5. Newcastle United 0 – 3 Manchester United – October 7th 2012

Though this result is on the border between convincing win and downright trouncing, it does score extra points for the fact that Jonny Evans and Tom Cleverley got on the score sheet for the visitors.

With the Red Devils determined to wrestle back the Premier League crown they had lost the previous season to Manchester City, a one-sided contest was always likely with United registering three times as many shots on goal as the hosts and winning with ease.

4. Newcastle United 0 – 4 Manchester United – April 5th 2014

Proof that the short-lived David Moyes era was not all doom and gloom came during a trip to St James Park last year, with United cruising to a 4-0 win that proved to be the biggest win the Red Devils enjoyed in the Premier League under the Scot.

Manchester United had lost 1-0 to Newcastle in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford earlier that season – a first home defeat to the Toon since 1972 – but two Juan Mata strikes either side of half-time coupled with goals from Javier Hernandez and Adnan Januzaj made it easy going here.

3. Newcastle United 1 – 5 Manchester United – February 23rd 2008

In a campaign where Manchester United won the Premier League and Champions League a trip to face a Newcastle side managed by Alex Ferguson’s old foe Kevin Keegan – in the midst of a second spell at the club – was always likely to end in an easy Red Devils win.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the unsurprising star of the show with the Portuguese winger scoring twice while Wayne Rooney added two more and Louis Saha came off the bench to add a fifth against his former club in injury time.

2. Newcastle United 2 – 6 Manchester United – April 11th 2003

Though the scoreline may not suggest it, Newcastle actually started the game quite well, with Jermaine Jenas opening the scoring with an absolute screamer. Little did he, or any of the Toon fans in attendance, realise what was to come.

United reacted in devastating style with Paul Scholes front-and-centre for much of the mayhem, scoring a hat-trick alongside goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Ruud Van Nistelrooy before Shola Ameobi reduced the deficit to the delight of precisely no one.

1. Newcastle United 5 – 0 Manchester United – October 19th 1996

Despite Manchester United’s dominance in the one-sided win stakes at St James’ Park, the biggest hammering ever witnessed at the ground was dished out to the Red Devils just a season after they had broken Toon hearts by stealing a first Premier League title away from the Magpies.

The first goal came from an unusual source – defender Darren Peacock – but the rest was classic Newcastle with David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and even Philippe Albert getting in on the action in a win that remains a favourite among Newcastle fans.
