Steffi Graf officially greatest sportswoman of all time
On the back of International Women’s Day the Ladbrokes News Team asked you, the readers, to vote for the greatest woman from the world of sport and the German tennis ace won by a landslide.
Graff’s 22 major titles and the fact she performed a historic clean sweep of the 1988 majors, while also picking up a Wimbledon doubles title and Olympic gold in the same year, saw her earn a whopping 53 per cent of the vote.
Second in the voting, and impressively so given she’s still in the early stages of her career, was UFC champion Ronda Rousey.
The Californian Bantamweight strap holder, who is unbeaten since swapping Olympic Judo for the MMA Octagon, picked up 26 per cent of the votes and with YouTube videos of her devastating power gaining viewers in their millions it won’t be long before the 28-year-old’s popularity soars further still.
Groundbreaking Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci took third place with 12 per cent of the vote, a result she will perhaps be disappointed with after being the first person to ever earn a perfect 10 score on the uneven bars – one of six 10s she earned at the 1976 Olympic Games.
Double Olympic Heptathlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee was fourth with six per cent of the votes and bringing up the rear despite a tally of 178 international goals was US soccer star Abby Wambach with three per cent.
So it’s hats off from us to Graff who shows Serena Williams that she’s got a way to go yet but if you don’t agree with the outcome of our poll get in touch in the comments below.
